An Oswego County veteran will be moving into a brand-new home later this year, free of cost, thanks to Homes For Our Troops, a national nonprofit that builds homes for severely injured veterans serving post-9/11.
Army Specialist Ryan Wilcox was deployed to Iraq in 2007, serving as a combat engineer with the 479th Engineer Battalion. On March 13, 2008, Wilcox was shot in the leg during a route clearance mission but recovered and was deployed again to Afghanistan in 2012 with the 444th Engineer Battalion. Over time the chronic pain caused by nerve damage and residual scar tissue became overwhelming and on June 7, 2012, he left Afghanistan on medical evacuation.
